Kids feeling bored and fed up? Why not get creative and make your own juggling balls!
This week I thought I’d give you a fun easy activity to do with your kids, and maybe even you can learn to juggle too.
Juggling is a fantastic skill to learn and so much fun once you get started, it helps improve hand-eye coordination and reaction speed, really there’s just no reason not to learn. Here’s my recipe for making awesome juggling balls to get you started on your journey.
And we’re not going to leave it there if you want to learn to juggle their lots of step by step guides on the internet to get you started.
Yes, a UNIcorn. I’m almost certain this is a question you ask yourself every day! 😉
I am so excited to announce that next week I will be starting my very own Unicycle club called…
Unicycling is so much fun for any age and there truly isn’t enough people out there that’s daft enough to try it, so I’mdetermined to change that. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never even sat on one before I will be going from the very basics and with a little determination anyone can do it! Don’t get me wrong it is a very difficult skill to learn and it does take time but life is about learning. Watch a baby learning to walk or a kid learning to ride a bike or even an adult learning to drive, all of those skills seemed impossible to them at the start but if they don’t give up and always keep pushing themselves further and further, they do it, they achieve the impossible! and I truly believe you can too.
So Nicky why UNIcorn’s? Well its simple, unicorns are awesome & unicycling is awesome, plus it’s pretty darn catchy too, isn’t it? 😉
With the support of Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds, Leeds children’s circus will be running the class for 6 weeks starting on Thursday the 12th of may at Harehills lane baptist church and it only costs £3 to take part.
6pm-7pm Age 10+
7:15-8:45pm Age 16 to 100
To add a little more fun to the project we will be taking part in a ‘wheely’ big challenge on Sunday the 12th June at the triathlon event in Leeds… but more about that soon!
This weekend I also will be out and about tormenting the people in Leeds city centre with our very own unicorn, let us know if you spot us (we won’t be hard to miss).
In just 7 days our first class will begin so if you have ever just wanted to try something crazy and impossible this is the best place to be.
Wherever you want to learn a skill that’s guaranteed to amaze your friends or just want a new hobby, Unicycling is for you!!
It’s that time of year again when you have to plan your little one’s special day and for a lot of parents this can be very stressful, your child has been waiting months for this party, counting down the days until they finally reach that next big number…
But don’t worry!
With a little guidance, you can plan the perfect day and make it so simple you don’t need to stress.
Plan in advance! The last thing you want to do is leave it to the last minute and
find the entertainment you needed is already booked up, so try to at least be planning a month in advance. (don’t worry if you are looking at this last min there’s still lots of useful tips)
Pick a date – For school age kids the weekends are a good place to start but if their birthday lands in the school holidays, remember to consider their friends might be away.
Get a venue – If you’re not having the party at home you will need some kind of venue; look local;, halls, sports clubs, functions rooms, clubs, cafes, play centres, churches. There are so many places to look but do keep in mind how many children you are inviting, there is no point booking a large sports hall for only 10 kids!
Theme or not to theme? – That is the question… The choice is yours really, do you want
to personalise the party around you child’s favourite TV show or film, have the kids dress up or maybe just a simple colour scheme think about it early help plan decorations or even the cake. Make it easy for yourself.
Entertainment – Nobody wants bored kids at a party, so suitable entertainment is a must! The best place to start is to ask your child what they would like,
everyone is different and their day is about them so make it special. I will be doing a more detailed blog soon about what entertainment is best for which ages but for now here are some ideas; face painting, circus show, balloon twisting, magic, soft play etc… the possibilities are endless! You could make it even easier and get an entertainer (like me) 😀 to organise this bit for you.
Invites – Once you have the date and venue, get out the invites asap and get them to RSVP so you can figure out how many will be turning up and remind them and the date gets closer.
Food – Another tricky one, just remember with small kids keep it simple. Children are fussy eaters at the best of times but when you trying to feed 30!? Go for plain sandwiches without sauces (adults can add their own mayo if they must) pizza and crisps are classics too, but don’t forget to give healthy options too like carrot sticks and fruit nibbles. Please remember to ask the parents before the party if any of the children have allergies or might be vegetarian etc. so you can plan in advance!
Cake – If you have the funds, support a local business and get a personalised cake, create that ultimate memory as they blow out the candles of this glorious (and tasty) piece of art! and if not there’s plenty of choice at your local supermarket or you can even add your own personal touch and bake a cake.
Decorations – Here’re some ideas to get you started; banners, balloons, paper plates and cups, table covers.
Party bags – You will have every child talking about the party you planned as the little ones have their very own gift to take home and show their parents, it’s a lovely treat to end on. Put some silly gift and games, sweets but don’t forget the all-important slice of birthday cake! 😉
Have fun and relax!!
Don’t forget these tips can help you no matter how big or small your budget. If you are strapped for cash try making your own party food, have a craft session and make your own decorations with your little assistant, play party games at home with your own music system. It will
be a lot more work on your part but no matter what your child will love the effort you’ve put into making their day special.
Hope this wasn’t too long for you and I know I’ve used way too many of these!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you need any more help I will be happy to give you more advice, just get in touch via the contact us page, I hope you now have lots of new exciting ideas, don’t stress… I believe in you 🙂
So this week has been a big one for me, I am officially “living the dream” give up my day job and have decided to take my business full time. Which has ultimately led me to ask…
What does make a professional face painter?
1. relating to or belonging to a profession.
“young professional people”
2. engaged in a specified activity as one’s main paid occupation rather than as an amateur.
“a professional boxer”
To me, becoming a professional means a lot more than just being paid to do something. It
has been a long and difficult process from when I started in 2009 as a teenager raising money for Raliegh, it has not only become a hobby it has become an obsession! Each year I am constantly learning to improve and striving for perfection.
Can you teach me??? Errr… Sorry no, it’s not that I don’t want to it’s just I simply wouldn’t know where to start. In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing and was simply a clueless teen with an artist flair. I had no idea what I was getting into. I bought myself a cheap set of face paints a few books and taught myself for the first couple of years but I was never happy with my designs and still never took myself seriously as an artist. In the past two years, something changed… I fell in love with my career, I was passionate about the art and wanted to the best I could be. I found like minded people on facebook from around the world, I watched dozens of youtube clips, I attended Jams and took courses, I invested money into upgrading my kit in being something I’m proud of and most of all I invested in knowledge and improved myself.
Now here I am, writing this blog. Just spent the entire day at a fabulous face painting class by the amazing Sarah Smith, feeling truly inspired and I wanted to share my story. Hopefully, one day I will be teaching my own classes and can show you how it’s done, but I’m still learning myself and have a very long way to go!
I am so proud to officially say I am now a professional face painter. You may think I’m crazy but hey, I agree 😉
So my starter tips on how to be a face painter
Spend a small fortune on investing a decentquality kit to get you started
Get insurance (Do NOT risk not having it)
Invest into yourself, go on courses & meet new people.
Remember, it’s very difficult and stressful running your own business, surround yourself with family and friends who’ll support you.
Practice, practice, practice NEVER STOP PRACTICING!!!
Have a wonderful Easter this year, and spend some quality time with your family.
There are so many events at this time of year that just sitting at home bored isn’t an option and I guarantee you there will be a local Easter event happening this weekend. Don’t know where to look? Let us inspire you… try looking up your local community centres, libraries, churches, schools pubs and clubs. So go explore your local community and get involved.
I would love for you to join us, more information is available here!
And if you can’t make it here’s a little bonus activity for you to try at home with your little ones.
Make your own easter egg!
Making your own Easter eggs is great fun and a fantastic money saver. Plus it’s a good solution if you or your child has a food allergy and you can’t find anything suitable in the shops. The recipe and method below is really easy and it doesn’t take a lot of time to do, but you do have to allow time for the chocolate to set. Here’s how to make one Easter egg (approx 14cms in height)
Ingredients (serves 1)
200g chocolate bars (2 x 100g bars, we used two M&S Organic Fair Trade 70% dark chocolate)
2 tsp olive oil
You will need:
2x half egg chocolate moulds (of course, you can just buy one half of a chocolate egg mould and repeat the process)
Unwrap both chocolate bars and break off one square from each – set aside for use later
Take one of the chocolate bars, break into pieces and place in a heat-proof bowl suspended over a pan of boiling water
As the chocolate starts to melt, stir in 1tsp of olive oil
Just before the chocolate has completely melted, turn off the heat
Using a teaspoon, place half of the mixture into one of the moulds
With the back of the spoon, spread the chocolate out evenly making sure all of the mould is covered
Repeat the process with the other half of the chocolate and the second mould
Place both moulds in the fridge for at least an hour to let the chocolate completely harden – repeat the process again with the second chocolate bar
Once set, remove from the fridge and hold the mould in your hand for a couple of seconds to warm it up slightly – this should enable you to remove the egg from the mould without breaking it but you still have to be a bit careful
To set the two halves together, take the two squares of chocolate that you set aside and melt them
Hold the two halves together and using a pastry brush carefully apply the melted chocolate to the join and allow to cool – this is slightly fiddly but definitely worth it
These instructions were brought to you from Netmums (I can paint but sorry I’m rubbish at cooking!) If you want more ideas on activities and games for your little ones this Easter click here for some more brilliant ideas.
Eat lots of chocolate, smile lots and have a wonderful weekend whatever you may do!!!
